Zomato's Facebook hire Namita Gupta quits

Gupta, former head of engineering for Facebook's Global Games Partner team, returned to India to work in a product startup

Namita Gupta, chief product officer of Zomata has quit in a year of her joining the restaurant search and discovery platform from social networking site Facebook. Zomato confirmed her exit, but did not elaborate.

Gupta, a former Head of engineering for Facebook's Global Games Partner team, returned to India to work in a product startup, a journey she hesitated to take in the past due to the country's IT services dominance.

Gupta was part of the trend of Indian startups hiring from Silicon Valley. E-commerce major Flipkart hired Punit Soni from Google recently.

But this has also led to exits of existing senior engineering talent from these firms. Last week, Flipkart saw its chief technology officer Amod Malvyia take on a non-operational role and its engineering head Sameer Nigam quitting the company. In February, Amitabh Misra, chief technology officer at Snapdeal had quit the post.

In the last one year, Zomato has been on an aggressive expansion mode, acquiring firms such as Urbanspoon in the US, peer player Mekanist in Turkey and Italian search service Cibando.
