Want to make a political statement in the election season? Buy sweets dipped in the colours of party flags or opt for saris embossed with party symbols.
Trying to cash on the election fever, a sweets shop in neighbouring Howrah district has started making sweets in the dominant colours of flags of political parties.
"We wanted to do something different for the elections and so decided to make sweets in party colours.This has increased our sales as the election fever is catching up," sweet shop owner, Keshto Haldar, said.Enthusiastic party workers are thronging the shop to have their share of 'rasogolla' and 'sandesh' daubed in party colours.
Not to be left behind, a designer sister duo are out with saris sporting party symbols. Mona Lamba and Pali Sachdeva, the designer sisters, have lined up three exquisite saris in their Loudon Street boutique, embossed with the symbols of Congress, Trinamool and BJP on the borders.The designers said they have designed the saris with a particular leader of the party in mind. "We had Sonia Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Sushma Swaraj in mind while designing them," Lamba said.
Cotton handloom in buff colour have been chosen for the saris and the party symbols have either been block printed or hand painted.Since they are meant for politicians who are expected to wear these while campaigning outdoors, comfortable material that drape well have been chosen.
Despite being designer clothes, the saris would cost about Rs 600. In the days to come, Mona-Pali are planning more saris with Mayawati's elephant symbol and the CPI(M)'s working class hammer and sickle symbols.
With the election fever gripping the entire country, Sachdeva said they felt the need to respond to the mood of the people and create something in keeping with the trend.
Another 58-year-old graphic designer and party worker Indra Madhab Dutta has made a white sari with the CPI (M)'s symbol of hammer and sickle embossed in red colour and gifted it to some party workers canvassing for votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
