The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) has appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers and Wazir Advisors to prepare an industry representation seeking 'merit list' status for ready-made garments for implementation of the goods and services tax (GST).
Union textiles minister Santosh Gangwar had already urged the government to keep the textile sector on the lowest level of GST.
Addressing an interactive meeting of garment manufacturers, Rahul Mehta, president of CMAI, said: "The appointment of global advisers would help do professional analysis of the industry which in turn would help produce our representation to the government better."
CMAI's payment default committee has recovered ~400 crore for its members since January this year. This amount was either purposely delayed or denied by CMAI members arguing downturn in the sector.
