Around 700 activists of CPI-M led by state secretary M Y Tarigami assembled at Pratap Park here, just outside the Congress headquarters, and raised slogans against the nuclear deal and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
As soon as Tarigami finished his address, the activists took to Maulana Azad Road for the rally.
However, it was disrupted by Congress workers, leading a brief clash.
The situation was brought under control by police and paramilitary forces deployed in the area. There were no reports of any injuries in the clashes.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, Tarigami claimed that the deal, if implemented would spell disaster for not only India but the entire south Asian subcontinent.
