Defeat In Up May Land Sp Leaders In Trouble

The loss of power in Uttar Pradesh may soon create difficulties for the leadership. Too many cases against the party leadership are awaiting resolution. These could lead to their future being as bleak as that of Narasimha Rao. There is the ayurvedic scam, running into crores of rupees. The inquiry into the scam has been stalled on one pretext or the other, and has only now been referred to the CBI. The case is likely to involve the Samajwadi leaders.
Similarly, in the cases relating to June 2, 95 incidents as at the guest house chargesheets have already been filed, but there has been no activity. A hostile government will soon accelerate the process. These are the two immediate issues which could land the leadership in difficulty.
The partys mass base has also taken a beating. Though the Yadavs in the state are by and large with the Samajwadi Party, they have shown a tendency to vote for other parties, too.
Muslims have stayed with the SP. The latter has become their own party and even the stated goal of voting for the candidate who is in a position to defeat the BJP has not been adhered to because of the fidelity towards the Samajwadi party and Mulayam Singh. The rise of the Muslim sectarian party, the Bhartiya Loktantrik Party, has damaged the SP in at least two constituencies. This trend is likely to gather momentum and will jeopardise the chances of the SP.
The base of the two top leaders of the Samajwadi Party, Mulayam Singh and Beni Prasad Verma, has weakened. In 93, Mulayam Singh had won from Shikchabad and Nidhauli. But this time they going to the BJP. In Jaswant Nagar, the party is locked in a close contest with the Congress. Even otherwise, the SP is fairing poorly in Etawah , Etah and even in Mainpuri, all part of Mulayams orbit.

Beni Prasad Verma has been weakened in Barabanki. He had scored an impressive victory in the Lok Sabha from Kaisergunj, wresting the seat from the BJP. This did not include his traditional constituency of Masauli in Barabanki. But now in his own district, of the five seats, the BJP is set to take two. In his own seat, Masauli, his son Rakesh Verma is facing problems against he BSPs Muslim candidate, who has managed to win over the Muslim vote of the Samajwadi party. Overall the leaderships base has weakened.
This does not get offset by the significant victories which it may score in Aligarh city, Saharanpur, Hardwar and possibly in Ayodhya Vidhan Sabha constituencies.
Thus, the writing is on the wall. The Samajwadi Party is getting marginalised and this process can only accelerate in the post-election scenario.
