I-T to examine poll candidates' finances ahead of state, general elections

Until now, the CBDT, according to its arrangement with the EC, only scrutinised cases that were being referred to it by the EC, from now on, it will look into the financial details of all candidates

  • Poll candidates declare income, wealth to Election Commission (EC)
  • So far, income tax (I-T) scrutiny only on cases referred to by EC 
  • Central Board of Direct Taxes widens scrutiny on all candidates 
  • I-T to verify poll affidavit with tax filings
  • Discrepancies found in recent assembly elections
  • Probe in past two years’ elections to be completed by July 
  • For upcoming polls, verification to be completed in five months
