India's solar power capacity touches 5,000 MW

Rajasthan leads the pack with 1,264 MW, followed by Gujarat (1,024 MW)

Solar power's moment of reckoning arrives

The total installed capacity of solar power projects reached a record 5,130 MW with installed capacity of 1,385 MW in current financial year.

Rajasthan leads the pack with 1,264 MW, followed by Gujarat (1,024 MW), Madhya Pradesh (679 MW), Tamil Nadu (419 MW), Maharashtra (379 MW) and Andhra Pradesh (357 MW).

The NDA government has revised the solar power capacity addition targets by five times to 1 lakh MW by 2022. In line with same, it aims to tender around 18,000 MW projects by March 2016.

Of the 1 lakh MW target, 60,000 MW is to be met through grid connected projects while balanced would be off-grid systems and rooftop solar projects.
 

The ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has also fixed year-wise targets to monitor the solar power generation in the country. The target for the current year is 2,000 MW and next year target is 12,000 MW.
