The Unique Identity card scheme, ‘Aadhar’, launched by the Centre on a national scale, has begun to get a good response from the public in Mysore district, with about 10,500 people registering per day on an average. So far, 540,000 people have registered in the district, according to deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta.

Of the 76 registration centres in the district, 35 are functioning in Mysore city. In all, 289 registration units are functioning in these centres. In addition to these, 61 more registration units will start functioning from this month-end and 18 of them will be in Mysore city, he said today.

Instances of some unscrupulous elements taking advantage of the scheme and cheating public has come to the notice of the authorities. Ten persons, including a woman, have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 468, 471 and 420 for cheating the public by issuing false affidavits and collecting money from them.

The police have already arrested an autorickshaw driver on charges of issuing false certificates and seized documents from him. He has been produced before the court, said the Deputy Commissioner.

Appealing to the public not to approach middlemen or agents for registration, he suggested that people directly approach the Comat agency’s men or officials concerned at the registration centres.

All members of the public will be enlisted compulsorily and UID numbers will be sent in phases to their mailing address mentioned in their application, Gupta added.
