Bharatiya Janata Party's ambitious project of inter-linking rivers is taking shape in Chhattisgarh. The state government has indicated that work on a link-project is likely to start in April.

The master-plan for project of interlinking rivers has been finalized.

The proposal will be discussed in the cabinet meeting for approval, Hemchand Yadav, state's water resources minister, said in the Chhattisgarh legislative assembly.

Yadav said the project will help in covering more areas for irrigation in the state.

As an experiment, the department has already started a project that would link two reservoirs in the state to meet water scarcity in some pockets.

The proposed 60 kilometre long canal project will link Gangrel Dam in Dhamtari district with the Tandula reservoir in Durg.

The state government will spend Rs 250 crore on the project.

The government had provisioned Rs 15 crore for the project in the current financial year.

Due to scanty rainfall in catchment areas of Tandula, the reservoir was filled not even half of its capacity.

On the other hand, Gangrel dam had been holding surplus water that the authorities were flowing out to river Mahanadi.

The reservoir linking project will help to bring 30,000 hectares of land in the command Area of Tandula under irrigation,Yadav said.
