Modi seeks EC action against Chidambaram for distributing free watches

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday sought action against Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and the Congress for unfair practices in the elections.

While addressing a rally at the Ramanathapuram district, Modi showed a wristwatch that carried pictures of Chidambaram and Congress' election symbol. He alleged free watches were being distributed to voters in the district by Chidambaram. Modi asked the Election Commission to take action against the minister and the party.

Talking about his plans, Modi said many places in the country could be developed as tourism destinations on the lines of Rameswaram. According to him, tourism was an employment generator and a fast growing industry, which could be developed with low investment." The BJP is committed to promote tourism in the country."

Talking about the issue of fishermen, he said fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were being harassed by the navies of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. "This is because we don't have a strong government at the Centre," Modi said.

The BJP leader said if his party came to power, fishermen would be provided with latest gadgets to locate concentration of fish in the sea.

At another function in Erode, Modi spoke about promoting industries to generate employment.

He urged people to vote for the BJP alliance in a big way, as this is a Lok Sabha election. "When state elections come, you take a different call but this is a Lok Sabha election. You need a friendly government in Delhi," said Modi.

Modi once again attacked former Union minister Jayanthi Natarajan for stalling projects. "In the name of environment, several projects were stalled and a Jayanthi Tax was imposed. Green was not about environment but about currency," said Modi.

"Madam Soniaji, if projects are held up due to environmental issues, how did it change after you changed the environment minister? Overnight 250 projects were cleared," said Modi.

Modi said his focus would be to initiate skill development programmes. "Can you think of a country where skilled labourers are becoming unskilled? This is what happened in India," said Modi.
