Acquisitions of Submarines by Indian Navy

Indian Navy has commissioned two submarines and de-commissioned five submarines in the last 15 years. Government has an approved submarine building plan for construction of submarines. However, the delivery schedule got delayed due to various reasons.

A Core Committee has been approved in October 2014 to identify suitable Indian shipyard (private / public) for construction of submarines.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Shri Ranjib Biswal in Rajya Sabha today.
