John Hurt, a British character actor who vanished inside dozens of roles, from Shakespeare to science fiction, including John Merrick, the hideously deformed title character in the 1980 film The Elephant Man, has died. He was 77.
His publicist in Britain, Charles McDonald, confirmed his death on Saturday. In June 2015, Hurt disclosed that he had pancreatic cancer.
