Will vacancy of seats in B-schools be a cause of worry amid rising number of management institutes?

Business Standard
Dear Students,

LAST WEEK WE ASKED:  Do you think vacancy of seats in B-schools will be a long term cause of worry amid rising number of management institutes?

BEST RESPONSE

With a steep increase in management colleges approved by AICTE, the quantitative supply of deteriorating higher education is transcending the qualitative demand. The below-par infrastructure in terms of faculty and facilities does not herald assurance in future. With a disappointing placement record at many management institutions, the pattern of vacancy seats seems very likely a long-term worry.
- Akshay Chadha, NSIT, Delhi.

OTHER RESPONSES:

As it was for engineering colleges before some years till now that there remained many vacant seats, same is the case with the B-schools now. The main reason behind the seats remaining is excess of the B-schools opening up for the students. Also the value that a management degree had before couple of years has now been degraded as there are excess of MBAs passing out every year with lower quality. There are many B-schools opened not even accredited by the AICTE and UGC.
- Hetal Porwal, IBS Ahmedabad.

The number of management institutes may have shown an upward swing in the current scenario but alongside ample number of seats remain vacant especially in lower grade B-schools. It is indubitable that the future of such institutes is a grave cause of concern. Because it is well understood fact among the graduates that merely having masters in business administration isn't going to suffice the need for a skilled job. Thus, it would be better not to waste precious resources like time and money for a simple degree rather apply their limited skills in a fruitful manner.
- Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow.

Amidst bleak economic scenario and poor placements in the lower rung colleges, the MBA degrees are no more a craze among the Indian middle class. The vacancy of seats in B-schools are due to the significant increase in the number of seats across colleges, shortage of skilled faculty, absence of industry link-ups, increasing awareness amongst students about the quality of education imparted by the colleges. With many college seats lying vacant,  many lower-rung colleges are finding it difficult  to sustain operations.  As a result,  a number of colleges may face closure or change in ownership over the next few years.
- Debayan Daw, ITM University, Gurgaon.

B-school have become ubiquitous in India. The number of specialisation and seats they offer have risen astronomically in the last Few years. The majority of B-school charge exorbitantly high fee without giving quality education, placement etc. Students are Now more interested in taking up a job instead of joining any B school as they have family obligations, loans etc. Besides, now, most of the students get jobs after under graduation which even after MBA they will get the same. So the relevance of the MBA has decreased leading to long term worry in B-School .
