A robotic 3D-printed exoskeleton suit has been reportedly created by 3D Systems and EksoBionics, to help a paralyzed skier walk for the first time since 1992.
Following a tragic skiing accident that left Amanda Boxtel parlyzed from waist down, doctors told her that she would never walk again.
But the designers from 3D Systems scanned her body, digitizing the contours of her spine, thighs, and shins, a process that helped them mold the robotic suit to her, combining the suit with a set of mechanical actuators and controls made by EksoBionics, to create the first-ever "bespoke" exoskeleton, the Cnet reported.
Scott Summit, the senior director for functional design at 3D Systems said that the connection between the body and the robot was everything, so the goal was to enhance the quality of that connection so the robot became more symbiotic.
