Americans divided over legalization of 'same-sex marriage' - Poll

Opinion about legalizing same-sex marriage still holds the American population at extreme ends with 47 percent opposing it, a recent survey has revealed.

A Fox News poll has found that 46 percent of voters favour legalizing gay marriage and 52 percent said that the US constitution guarantees same-sex couple the right to marry.

According to the survey results, 56 percent voters think that each state should have the power to decide whether to allow for same-sex marriage or not.

People under the age of 35, which constitute 64 percent, support gay marriage while 55 percent who are above the age of 65 years oppose it.

 

The data has underwent change from 2003 when 32 percent of voters said same-sex couples should be allowed to marry legally, and 58 percent were opposed.

39 percent of voted in favour of change in definition of 'marriage' so as to include same-sex couples.
