Julian Assange refused to meet actor Benedict Cumberbatch while he was preparing to play the WikiLeaks founder in upcoming movie The Fifth Estate, a leaked email has revealed.

In the letter, sent in January, Assange described the film as 'toxic' and 'distorted', urging the actor to reconsider his involvement in the movie.

According to the BBC, Snowden has been living at the Ecuadorean embassy in London after claiming asylum a year ago to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Released by Wikileaks, his email was written in response to Cumberbatch's request for a meeting, something Assange called 'a bad idea'.

The Fifth Estate received a standing ovation at its world premiere during the Toronto Film Festival last month and is released this Friday 11 October in the UK and in the US next week, the report added.
