Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, a prominent Burundi human rights activist, was shot and seriously wounded by gunmen on motorbikes in Bujumbura.
According to BBC, the activist was in the intensive care unit in Bujumbura hospital following the shooting which took place near his home, north of the capital, last evening.
Mbonimpa is believed to be one of the few members of Burundi's civil society opposed to President Pierre Nkurunziza's controversial bid for a third term in office.
Burundi has suffered serious unrest since Nkurunziza won the presidential elections held last month, which was boycotted by the opposition on grounds of contravention of the Constitution.
