Chinese government hackers have been suspected of breaching the United States postal service computer networks, giving away the data of around 8,000 employees including the postmaster general's.
According to the Washington Post, some officials said that the intrusion was discovered in mid-September. However, they declined to comment on who was thought to be responsible.
The hacked data included names, dates of birth, dates of employment, social security numbers, addresses, and other information, officials said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation into the hacking scandal.
The U.S. Postal Service announced the news as American President Barack Obama reached Beijing on Monday for high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Chinese government has constantly denied accusations that it engages in cyber theft and asserts that the Chinese law prohibits cybercrime.
