World number one Novak Djokovic suffered a major blow as he crashed out of the Monte Carlo Masters after tasting a defeat at the hands of 55th ranked Jiri Vesely in the second round of the men's singles event on Wednesday.

The Serbian responded magnificently after dropping the first set, but was unable to capitalize on it and eventually ended up with a 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 loss to his Czech opponent in the contest that lasted for two hours and six minutes.

It was Djokovic's second loss of the season and his first defeat to a player outside the Top 50 since his 2010 loss against the then World No. 74 Xavier Malisse.

Vesely will now lock horns with either Gael Monfils or Paolo Lorenzi in the third round.
