Afghanistan's former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah is reportedly leading early vote count in presidential election, following last week's voting, the country's Independent Election Commission chairman said.

Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani said that Abdullah received 41.9 percent of the vote, but cautioned that it was too early to tell if a single candidate would get the majority of the vote needed to win the presidency without a runoff, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, Abdullah is followed by former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani, who secured 37.6 percent of the vote, officials said.

About 7 million Afghans voted in the historic presidential election in the country on April 5.

Ballots are being hand-counted across the nation, and it will be a while before the results are finally announced, the report added.
