Describing the Emergency imposed in India exactly 40 years ago by then prime minister Indira Gandhi as 'horrible days', Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Gurudas Dasgupta on Wednesday said there was a tremendous attack on the democratic system of the country.
"Horrible days, I can recollect. There was ban on newspapers, there was ban on political activities, there was surveillance. People's freedom and democratic rights were severely curbed and there was a tremendous attack on the democratic system of the country," Dasgupta told ANI here.
Commenting in the present context, the CPI leader said fundamentals of the Indian democratic system are being destroyed by the present government.
""The way the Prime Minister is moving, it is a curse for the collective responsibility of the Cabinet. And the government is not moving, it is a single man who moves," he added.
Dasgupta further said it is extremely unfortunate that the basic and fundamental problems of the human beings have not been sorted out.
"About 30 percent of the population is still poor and there are about 10 crores of unemployed young men in the country. There is food inflation, there is slowdown, there is less investment, growth is highly unstable," said Dasgupta.
"Therefore, I can only believe that these years after freedom have not been able to deliver goods to the common people," he added.
