China's state-run media has reportedly lashed out at Hong Kong's pro-democracy lawmakers for being 'destroyers' of democratic development, a day after they snubbed the Beijing-backed electoral reform package.
An editorial published in the Chinese Communist Party's flagship newspaper on Friday condemned the decision and accused the pro-democracy faction of being 'selfish' for rejecting the government's proposals, reported Fox News.
It remarked that the actions of the opposition camp showed that they were the "upsetters and destroyers of Hong Kong's democratic development process."
The electoral reforms would have allowed the region to elect its leader for the first time but required the candidates contesting the election to be vetted by Beijing.
The proposal was slammed by pro-democracy lawmakers as 'fake democracy.
