President Pranab Mukherjee met Kuwait's Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah here today to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.

Sheikh Jaber, who is on a four-day state visit to India, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday.

This is the first head of government-level visit from Kuwait to India since the post of Crown Prince and prime minister was bifurcated in 2003.

The last visit by a head of government from India to Kuwait was in 1981, when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had visited the country.

Sheikh Jaber is being accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers, senior officials and captains of industry.

India and Kuwait historically share friendly relations based on close people-to-people contacts.

Kuwait is a major supplier of India's energy needs, with almost 10 percent of the country's petrol imports sourced from the Gulf country.
