The Supreme Court of Pakistan has stayed the execution of actress Veena Malek, who was convicted along with her husband, TV host Shaista Lodhi and leading media group owner Mir Shakeelur Rehman on charges of blasphemy.

The three-judge bench of the apex court that passed an interim order after hearing for an hour arguments of the counsel of Rahman on a plea filed by him, issued notice to the attorney-general for Pakistan and adjourned the case, Gulf News reported.

In November, the Gilgit-Baltistan antiterrorism court had sentenced the four to 26-year imprisonment and fine of 1.3 million rupees each for hurting religious sentiments of people in a show broadcast live on Geo TV in May.

The programme had showed Veena Malik dancing with her husband while a group of Sufi musicians sang a devotional song about the wedding of the daughter of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
