Crossing party lines on Monday, politicians condemned the attack on Communist leader Govind Pansare, and called for a swift nabbing of the culprits involved.
Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar wished Pansare speedy recovery.
"We condemn the attack on him. The police must nab the perpetrators at the earliest. We wish that he recovers soon," Javadekar said.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik said, "We strongly condemn the life-threatening attack on Govind Pansare. He was a person who has always fought for the poor and justice, it is very sad that he has been attacked. State government should take strict action and arrest the culprits. People of Maharashtra want to know the motive behind the attack, because such attacks hint towards a conspiracy in the state. A special team should be formed immediately to look into the matter."
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury said, "This attack is utterly condemnable. We will take this matter up with the state government."
Pansare and his wife were severely injured after unknown assailants had fired on the couple while they were out for their morning walk.
