President Mukherjee extends greetings to Indian workers on May Day

President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday extended greetings to all workers of India on the occasion of May Day.

"On the occasion of May Day, I extend my heartiest greetings and good wishes to all the workers of India. May Day, also known as 'Labour Day' or 'International Workers' Day', is an occasion when we pay

tribute to the contribution that workers have made to progress, prosperity and well- being of our society," the President's message read.

"The increasing production and higher standards of living that our economy has witnessed would not have been possible without the relentless efforts of our vital labour force. Let us, on this day

 

recognize and celebrate the enormous role our working force is playing in enabling our nation attain rapid socio-economic progress," it added.

May Day has been observed in India since 1923, when Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan organised celebrations for the same in Chennai.
