Sparkling centuries from Joe Root and Jos Buttler had helped England set a New Zealand a mammoth target of 409 in the first one-day international (ODI) of the five-match series at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Having won the toss, New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum elected to field first. His decision seemed to be well thought out as Trent Boult dismissed Jason Roy off the very first ball of the innings.

However, England's in-form batsman Root and Alex Hales shared a quick partnership of 50 runs before the latter became the second victim of Boult.

England skipper Eoin Morgan then joined the party, adding 121 runs in the next 15 overs with Root.

England were in a spot of bother after losing the set pair but Buttler and Adil Rashid just took the game away from the Kiwis, hitting the bowlers to all parts of the ground.

Buttler in particular did not show any respect to any bowler and scored 129 runs off just 77 balls. He hit five sixes and 13 fours in his brisk innings. Rashid gave him ample support, scoring 69 before getting out in the last over.

Towards the end, Liam Plunkett hit two sixes to take the score past 400.

Boult, who picked up four wickets for 55 runs, was the only silver lining for the Black Caps.
