Defending champion Maria Sharapova suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Czech Lucie Safarova in the fourth round of the French Open.
Sharapova, who was one of the favourites to win the French Open this year, never really looked in command and lost in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 to the 13th seeded Safarova, the BBC reported.
The Russian tried to counter the outstanding display of tennis by the Czech player, but all her efforts went in vain.
Safarova will now face Garbine Muguruza, who defeated Flavia Pennetta 6-3 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
