Saradha scam: Mamata may have to resign, says BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday categorically said it is quite possible that Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee may have to resign as the West Bengal Chief Minister as the names of very senior leaders of her party are gradually coming to the fore in the Saradha chit-fund scam.

"Given the kind of information that is coming out in a day-to-day basis in the Saradha scam and the names of very senior people in the Trinamool Congress keep getting discussed and revealed, perhaps Miss Mamata Banerjee may need to reflect on her statement because it is possible that the fingers may point directly to the party and she may have to resign," BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said while reacting to Mamata's assertion that she would quit the chief minister's chair if it was proved that she had any links to the ponzi scheme.

The West Bengal Chief Minister made this remark in the backdrop of recent allegations made by suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh.

"First you have to prove it. You have to give evidence. It (Saradha) was never done in our time. It was the Left Front's time and Congress' time and BJP's time. You have to prove it otherwise I will resign from my post," Banerjee told the media in New Delhi yesterday.

"We arrested the man (Sudipto Sen). We set up the judicial commission. We returned the money to five lakh individuals. This allegation is absolutely wrong," she added when asked why for the first time in her political career she was being accused by her political rivals of corruption in the Saradha scam.

Suspended TMC MP Kunal Ghosh, who is languishing in jail for his alleged complicity in the Saradha scam, had earlier this month threatened to commit suicide if others involved in the swindle were not arrested.

Ghosh, who headed Saradha media arm before being arrested in November last year, has been alleging the involvement of several leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress including its top brass.
