The Sri Lankan parliament has reportedly voted to curb the powers of the president and reinstate a two-term limit for incumbents.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had expanded his powers during his decade-long regime. After he was reelected in 2010, he abolished the two-term limit for the president, allowing him to stand for a third time. His successor, Maithripala Sirisena, who secured a shock victory in the elections, had promised to bring in reforms, reported the BBC.
Deputies also scrapped president's power to dissolve the parliament until it has completed four-and-a-half years of its five-year term. Earlier, the president could sack the parliament within a year of its formation.
