The Statue of Liberty and Grand Canyon in the United States has reopened after state officials reached deals with the federal government.
Mount Rushmore and Rocky Mountain National Park were among the famous landmarks that re-opened to tourists, but California's Yosemite National Park and the notorious Alcatraz Prison near San Francisco remained closed.
According to the Mirror, New York put up more than 230,000 pounds and Arizona 400,000 pounds to reopen the monuments for one week in a desperate bid to save tourism jobs with no guarantee that the money will be reimbursed.
Utah pledged more than one million pounds to re-open Mount Rushmore, Rocky Mountain National Park and eight federal sites for 10 days.
According to the report, across the United States a million public sector workers have been on unpaid leave for nearly two weeks since Barack Obama's Republican opponents refused to pass a budget unless his health plans were delayed.
