The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted for a resolution paving the way for an inquiry into rights abuses at the end of Sri Lanka's civil war.

The United States and the United Kingdom were among the countries, which sponsored a resolution that is for the first time calling for an international probe.

According to the BBC, Sri Lanka has consistently denied allegations of rights abuses and said it is being unfairly targeted.

The resolution however calls for a 'comprehensive investigation into alleged serious violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes by both parties in Sri Lanka,' the report added.
