Hours after the Supreme Court criticized the poor progress of the Ganga Action Plan and asked the Centre whether it would be able to complete the cleaning of the river in this term or in the next, Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti on Wednesday said that it is unfair to expect results in mere six months when nothing much was done in this regard in the last 29 years.
"We are dedicated towards the Clean Ganga Mission. You will see the results in two years time. You are being unfair if you expect results in mere six months for something that wasn't done in 29 years," Bharti told mediapersons here.
"I will not comment on anything on what the Supreme Court has said. Even the court agrees that water is a state subject. Cleaning Ganga is our task and we will do anything that the Supreme Court directs in this matter," she added.
Earlier in the day, the apex court pulled up Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre on the issue of cleaning of the Ganges and asked for a status report on setting up of sewage treatment plants within six months.
The apex court asked the Centre if it will be able to clean river Ganga in this term.
