Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri was knocked out of the Citi Open by South Africa's Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals of the men's singles event here on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who showcased his best ever performance on the ATP World Tour, fought valiantly throughout the three-set thriller against 15th seed Anderson before bringing an end to his impressive campaign in Washington.

After losing the first set, the Indian qualifier rebounded strongly to win the second before again going down to eventually suffer 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 defeat against Anderson in the quarter-final clash that lasted almost two hours.

On his way to the last-eight, Bhambri tamed world number 22 and defending champion Gael Monfils of France as well as world number 100 Guido Pella of Argentina.
