Rabi acreage up around 8%

The total rabi sown area till 9th December stood at 625 lakh hectares (lh), up around 8% compared to 578.47 lh planted in the corresponding week last year, according to latest data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday, media reports noted. Wheat, which accounts for more than half the sown area, moved to 326.46 lh. The area under pulses cultivation also surged by around 5% to 151.26 lh.

Area under Chana or Gram, recorded an increase of over 8% to top 102 lh. Area under coarse cereals jumped nearly 13% to over 51 lh. However, the area under oilseeds remained marginally lower at 77.68 lh. There is a 12% jump in winter rice sowing with the total area going up to 18.55 lh.
