A man was charged by Australian police on Tuesday after allegedly breaking into a home, drinking the owner's champagne and then falling asleep on her bed, the media reported.

Police said the 36-year-old man forced his way into the house in Esperance, Western Australia, on July 28, reports the BBC.

He fell asleep after drinking the resident's "quite expensive" champagne, officers said.

The owner returned home and allegedly found the thief on her bed.

"She used her great initiative and crept outside the house to call the police who arrested the offender," a senior police official told the BBC.

"On arriving at the house, the police found the man asleep."

The man was taken to hospital after being found "very intoxicated", the official added.
