Over a hundred students of Jadavpur University here took out a protest march on Tuesday demanding holding of the students' union elections ahead of the West Bengal assembly polls.

The march took place after a recent agitation and series of dialogues where the students had held vice chancellor Suranjan Das and other officials virtually captive for over 48 hours following an advisory by the West Bengal higher education department that the state-run university hold the union elections after the assembly polls slated to be completed by May.

The students walked from the campus to the Dakshinapan shopping complex and back to the 8B bus-stand located next to the university.

A meeting between Governor K.N. Tripathi, who is also the university chancellor, and agitating students failed to reach an agreement on holding of union elections.

"We will hold a general body meeting on our next course of action," a student protester said.
