The Border Security Force said on Tuesday it seized over 1.68 kg of smuggled gold worth around Rs 51 lakh from West Bengal and arrested three people.

Acting on a tip-off, the officials intercepted a person riding a bicycle from the Indo-Bangladesh border at Amudia in North 24 Parganas district and recovered 10 pieces of gold worth Rs 12.33 lakh, the official said.

"During interrogation, the accused, Ramesh Chander Sarkar, revealed that Bangladeshi smugglers had assured him that he would get some amount after successful delivery of the consignment," the BSF official said.

In a separate incident, security officials chased two bikers at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district, but they fled leaving behind the bikes.

"During a search of the bikes, four gold biscuits valued around Rs 39 lakh were recovered. The seized gold was hidden inside the bikes' air-filters," an official said.

The south Bengal frontier of the security agency has this year seized 20.291 kg gold worth Rs 6.22 crore and apprehended 8 gold smugglers.
