Rs 81 lakh in US, Indian currency seized at Kolkata airport

The air intelligence unit officers of customs seized US dollars and Indian currency notes collectively amounting to about Rs 81 lakh from a passenger at the city airport, an official said on Thursday.

"In the intervening night of April 19 and April 20, air intelligence unit officers detained one passenger named Pradip Kumar Mustafi of Behala in Kolkata from the departure area of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport and seized 1,24,000 US dollars and Indian currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination, collectively amounting to Rs 81 lakh (approx)," an official statement said.

The passenger was detained while moving towards the security hold area of the airport's departure area, after completion of his immigration formalities

 

He was scheduled to depart to Hong Kong by Cathay Dragon flight on Thursday.

"He was arrested and produced before the Barasat court. Investigations are in progress," an official added.
