At least seven persons were killed on the spot when two private cars collided on the outskirts of Lonavala in Pune district, an official said here on Sunday.
The collision took place near Karla village on the old Mumbai-Pune Highway between a Santro and a Swift, he said.
The Swift had victims hailing from Pimpri-Chinchwad town near here, but the details of the occupants of the Santro are not available, Lonavala Rural Control police official Dnyaneshwar Jadhav told IANS.
The bodies of the victims as well as some of injured persons were taken to a local hospital even as heavy rains lashed the hilly area and rest of the district.
The identity of the victims is being ascertained and the cause of the accident is being probed, Jadhav added.
The accident resulted in massive traffic snarls with hundreds of vehicles stuck on both sides of the old highway as rescue teams cleared the accident site.
