An activist of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress was shot dead from close range Wednesday in South 24 Parganas district where panchayat polls are due Friday, police said.

The killers entered the house of Nazrul Mollah in Shaksahar village and shot him. He died at the spot.

Six people, including Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) district secretariat member Sattar Mollah, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime.

A court sent Mollah and three others to judicial custody.

Trinamool leader Arabul Islam blamed the CPI-M for the killing. "They are trying to create terror," he said.

CPI-M district secretary Sujan Chakraborty said the conspiracy to kill Mollah was hatched to "frame" its leaders including Mollah, a key party functionary in Bhangar.
