Kolkata's traffic police has banned cycling on one of the most important roads of the city - the Rashbehari Connector that joins Gariahat to the Eastern Bypass

Cycling is being encouraged across cities in the developed world with dedicated cycle lanes. Europe in particular has taken the lead, with bicycle pools available for cyclists in Paris and London. But Kolkata is moving in the reverse direction. As the picture shows, the city’s traffic police has banned cycling on one of the widest (it is a dual carriageway) and most important roads in the city — the Rashbehari Connector that joins Gariahat to the Eastern Bypass.
