The decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to wrap up N Srinivasan's innings as International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman and ask BCCI President Shashank Manohar to pad up in his place could well spell the end of the road for the Tamil Nadu strongman.
The former BCCI chief has been at the wrong end of the stick ever since he and his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan got entangled in a series of conflict-of-interest issues. That he was allowed to head the ICC even after he was disqualified for BCCI meetings defies logic; it took the Supreme Court to put him in his place. Srinivasan's ambition to run the cricket board like his personal fiefdom and bestow favours on those close to him also brought him under the scanner.
By adhering to the 'one man, one job' principle and prohibiting conflict of interest, Manohar has rung in the necessary changes. The result: Team India director Ravi Shastri has been dropped from the Indian Premier League Governing Council and Roger Binny has been removed from the selection panel as his son Stuart Binny is an active player eligible for selection. The appointment of an ombudsman to handle conflict of interest issues should also be welcomed.
