The government has a better record at gender equality than the media. Or so Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia observed at the Economic Editor’s Conference. Referring to the presence of a larger number of women in the panel compared to the scanty presence of women journalists, he said, “We are seeking a great demographic change among us and, I think, we at the government are doing a better job.” As an afterthought he added that the difference could also be because “women journalists are just not that interested in us (the Planning Commission)”.
