Dipa Karmakar, the Tripura-based gymnast who finished fourth in the women's vault gymnastics event at the ongoing Rio Olympics, was mistaken by many to be a Maharashtra-based sportsperson because her surname was similar to a common Marathi one.

An account claimed that a famous Mumbai cricketer, in a call to Karmakar, spoke to her in Marathi, only to be told that she didn't speak the language. Even Sports Minister Vijay Goel had spelt her name as "Dipa Karmanakar" in a tweet only to delete it later.
