With the 2014 general elections approaching, the Congress has decided to take on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on his home turf.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) General-Secretary Gurudas Kamat on Thursday said the Gujarat unit would start a campaign against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign committee chief in the state, “exposing his false claims”.

“We would first beat him on his home turf during our three-month campaign in Gujarat by spreading the truth about his lies ,” Kamat said after a party meeting here on Thursday.

“Let him (Modi) campaign across the country for three months. By then, we would go to the streets of Gujarat, exposing his lies before the public. A decision on this would be taken at our meeting on July 30 in Rajkot,” said Kamat, the party’s Gujarat incharge for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee would hold a two-day meeting of party leaders in Rajkot on July 29-30.

Kamat, a  member of Parliament and a former Union minister, maintained the state Congress was geared up for polls.

“There had been some limitations in our preparations during previous state Assembly elections. But we are meeting party workers and local leaders to decide the strategy for the general elections,” he said.

Party workers and leaders from 18 of Gujarat’s 33 districts had gathered here to meet and discuss strategies. Leaders from other states, including Punjab’s Ashwani Sekhri and Madhya Pradesh’s Sajjan Singh Verma, besides those from the state, such as Shankarsinh Vaghela, Shaktisinh Gohil and Arjun Modhwadia, were present.
