In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke new ground by extensively using technology to fight the Lok Sabha elections. The highlight of that campaign was his use of 3D hologram technology to address public meetings at the same time across India, particularly to reach out to people in the remoter towns.

For the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the PM wants all his party Members of Parliament, legislators and workers to fight the polls as much on social media as on the ground. In a series of meetings over the last one week with party MPs, the PM has impressed upon them the need to become smartphone savvy and engage the 18 to 25 years old age group, including those school going students who by 2019 will be old enough to get voting rights.

The PM today met with BJP MPs from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Kerala at his residence. This was the fifth and last in a series of meetings that the PM has held with party MPs from different states. He said smartphones will be the biggest interface between communicators and the people at large in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Modi asked his MPs to increase their presence on social media and become adept at using smart phones. He said MPs should use Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and other social networking platforms to engage with voters, particularly the youth.
