Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today announced that the state government will recruit 13,000 sanitation workers (safai karamcharis) in urban areas.
He said there will be no retirement age for watchmen (chowkidars) in rural areas as if a watchman is unable to continue due to old age, his son can take over his job.
Hooda said that new posts of 'safai karamcharis' would be advertised within next 15 days.
At present, 7,000 safai karamcharis are already working in urban areas of the state.
A new scheme is also being drafted for the 'chowkidars' working in rural areas, the chief minister said.
Describing 'chowkidars' and 'safai karamcharis' as the backbone of development of villages, Hooda said that earlier, sanitation workers were not appointed at the level of villages.
"But the present state government appointed 11,000 safai karamcharis in the villages in 2007 and now increased their honorarium from Rs 3,525 to Rs 8,100 from January 2014," he said.
Hooda said their honorarium would be directly deposited to their bank accounts through Block Divisional Officers (BDO) and for this, they are required to open bank accounts.
He said similarly, the state government has also decided to do away with the system of contracts for safai karamcharis in municipal committees and from now honorarium to such employees would be made by concerned corporations.
