The country boat with about 40 people and cattle on board was sailing from Chapar in Dhubri district to Oudubi when it capsized in Champavati river at around 7 pm, the sources said.
Ten passengers swam to safety while 30 others were missing.
Senior district administration officials have reached the spot and a search operation is on.
