At least four persons were killed and ten others injured in a road accident in Egypt after a microbus turned over near Port Said.

The microbus coming from Cairo was on its way to Port Said when its driver lost control due to maintenance work on the road yesterday, a security source said.

Security forces and ambulances rushed to the accident spot and transferred injured to hospitals.

Early in November, two major accidents took place in Egypt's different governorates, killing at least 28 people.

Following the two accidents, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had assigned a specialist council for community development to devise a complete scheme to minimise road accidents.

The government has again amended the traffic law, for the second time in six months, putting harsher punishments on violators.

Amendments include a penalty of a minimum of one year in prison for driving under the influence of drugs, and if the driver injures one or more persons he may get at least two years in prison.

Egypt has one of the world's highest accident rates owing to careless driving and poor road and vehicle conditions.

The WHO ranks Egypt as the world's tenth worst country in road accidents, after India, China and the US.
